My Music

It's a little hilarious for me to be posting about my favorite music since I am so illiterate when it comes to music. I suppose my favorite music is folk music. I like acoustics, specifically guitar. Lyrics are really important to me and I find that folk/acoustic music tends to have more interesting lyrics than most pop songs. I like this type of music because I can identify with the lyrics and I'm not overly intimidated by the music. On the opposite extreme, I like jazz but I know that I don't understand it and can't always follow along with it, so I don't tend to listen to it. I do listen to some pop music, but not really the latest type of pop. I tend to like the stuff I "grew up" with and will only occasionally see a concert. Over the past six years, I can think of only a handful of concerts I've been to: Prince (because I grew up with his music and he is an absolutely incredible showman and musician), Bob Dylan and Neil Young.

One artist I seem to never tire of is Bob Dylan. There is something about his voice. It's not like I think he's a beautiful singer, it's that his voice is just so cool. I find it mesmerizing in a way that makes me feel better even when he sings about something sad or angry. My husband (then boyfriend) introduced me to Dylan in college and many of his songs simply remind me of college years and an innocent time with no worries, or they touch a spark in me on a political or personal level.

One of the first Dylan songs I ever heard, "Tangled Up in Blue," was from a tape that my husband made me in college and it still reminds me of our dating. He loved me from the start and I didn't treat him very well. We broke up a lot and kept getting back together. Obviously, the entire song isn't relevant to my life with him, but when I listen to this song, I still hear Ken's love for me back then (and now). Click on photo to hear the song.

Yay Bob Dylan! My dad is a classic rock fan (well, I'm sure it wasn't "classic" when he first listened to it...), so I grew up with Dylan too. Classic rock reminds me of being outside in the summertime - doing yard work with Dad or paying tag with my cousins while my dad and his brothers worked the grill... I think music has the same power as scent to strongly evoke the past...
